Smyth is the inventor of the world famous method of sewing books with thread, known as “Smyth Sewing”. The Irish-American inventor, David McConnell Smyth (1833-1907), patented his thread book sewing machine in 1879 and, in doing so, founded the Smyth Manufacturing Company in Hartford – Connecticut (USA).

In 1958 a consortium of Italian businessmen, Lorenzo Depetris and Osvaldo Tealdi, together with Casa Editrice Marietti, Smyth Manufacturing Co. (USA) and Smyth Horne Ltd. (England) established Smyth Europea Spa in Northern Italy.  In 1970 Smyth Europea Spa acquires the shares, designs and know-how from Smyth Manufacturing Co and replaces the American parent company in the world market in the production of bookbinding machinery. In 2000 a new corporate organization leads to the foundation of Smyth Srl and a new 13,000 square meter production facility in an industrial area near Milan where it is still located today. In its long journey, the company has manufactured several pioneers and successful semi-automatic and automatic models of sewing machines for books printed on offset and digital printing machines. They are easy to use and of high quality and help significantly to save production costs.
